The six exercises
| Exercise | What the pupil does |
|---|---|
| Write the Italian | The figure is printed; the pupil writes the number out in Italian. |
| Write the figure | The Italian is printed; the pupil writes the digits beside it. |
| Matching pairs | Figures down the left, the Italian shuffled down the right, matched by letter. |
| Fill the gaps | Counting runs with numbers missing. Above 1,000 the runs step in hundreds or thousands. |
| Mixed review | Both directions on one sheet, then two counting runs. A unit test on one page. |
| Dictation | Answer lines for the class and a read-aloud list for you, in a separate file. |
The ranges, and the rule each one drills
| Range | What it brings in |
|---|---|
| 1 to 10 | uno to dieci on their own. |
| 1 to 20 | The teens, where sedici turns into diciassette. |
| 1 to 30 | Adds ventuno, ventitré and ventotto. |
| 1 to 100 | Every ten, every dropped vowel and every accented tré. |
| 100 to 1,000 | cento with no un, centouno, centootto, centottanta. |
| 1,000 to 10,000 | mille, then duemila: the plural that changes the word. |
| 10,000 to 1,000,000 | Long words built from the same parts, up to un milione. |
| Mixed 1 to 1,000,000 | Every size of number on one sheet. |
| Custom range | Any range from 0 to 1,000,000. |
Printing
The PDFs are A4 and print on US Letter with fit to page switched on. Print worksheet prints the pupils’ pages only, and Print answer key prints the key only, so the key does not end up photocopied with the questions by accident. Figures on the sheets use the English comma (1,000); the big numbers page explains that Italy writes it 1.000.
The chart and the sheets may be printed and photocopied for classroom use. For a lesson to go with them, the 1 to 100 page explains the pattern of the tens, and the pronunciation page gives the stress of every word up to 20.
Questions teachers ask
Does each Italian numbers worksheet come with an answer key?
Yes, as a separate file. Download PDF and Print worksheet carry the questions only, so the sheet can go to the class or onto a Google Classroom assignment without the answers. Answer key (PDF) and Print answer key give you the key on its own, with each prompt beside its answer so you can mark from the key alone. Dictation sheets come with a read-aloud list in place of a key.
Which spelling does the key use for 108 and 101?
centootto and centouno, the forms Treccani’s Enciclopedia dell’Italiano gives as usual. It describes centotto and centuno as rare, but both are written, so the key prints "(also centotto)" beside any answer containing centootto and "(also ventunmila)" beside ventunomila. Every other answer has one spelling. The reasons, with the sources, are on the how the words are checked page.
Can I make a sheet for just 1 to 10 or 1 to 20?
Yes. The ranges run 1 to 10, 1 to 20, 1 to 30, 1 to 100, 100 to 1,000, 1,000 to 10,000 and 10,000 to 1,000,000, plus a mixed range across every size and a custom range anywhere from 0 to 1,000,000. On 1 to 10 the sheet uses each number once before repeating any, since there are only ten to draw from.
Why do some numbers turn up on most sheets?
The draw is weighted toward the numbers learners get wrong: the tens that drop a vowel (ventuno, trentotto), the accented tré (ventitré), the switch at 17 (sedici, diciassette), cento and mille with no un, and the first mila. About a third of each sheet comes from those groups and the rest is spread so that every ten in the range appears at least once.
How do I send a worksheet to my class?
After you generate a sheet, the Share to Google Classroom button opens Classroom with a link to that exact sheet. The link carries the recipe for the sheet, not the answers, and opens with the key hidden. You can also download the PDF and attach it, or copy the link into Teams or an email.
Can I put my school or class name on the sheet?
Yes. Type it into the School or class box before you press Generate and it prints at the top of every page of both the worksheet and the key. It is optional, it is kept with the sheet’s link, and it does not change which numbers are drawn.
